Portal to American PortraitsPortrait Search
Search more than 100,000 portrait records from the Catalog of American Portraits (CAP), a survey of American portraits in public and private collections across the United States and abroad. The CAP encompasses portraits of American subjects or by American artists, generally limited to one-of-a-kind likenesses such as paintings, sculpture, drawings, miniatures, silhouettes, and daguerreotypes. New material is added regularly, and this information is automatically published to the website after it is cataloged and validated. National Portrait Gallery collections are included in this portrait database, as well as portraits relating to NPG exhibitions. If you wish to search NPG collections only, go to NPG Collections Search.
Search portraits by entering Sitter or Artist names or portrait titles in the search box.
Search Sitters and/or Artists separately (distinguished by the roles of Sitter or Artist), titles, object or biographical keywords, classifications, media, dates, departments, or reference numbers, or any combination of these criteria.
Search by names, dates, or biographical keywords for more than 50,000 portrait sitters or artists before linking to the works of art.
A "Browse Selections" page offers groups of portraits representing various themes for browsing.
In most cases, reproduction rights have not been granted, and users must contact the owners for both the images and the rights to reproduce those images.
